UK Delivery Costs for Online Retailers: Royal Mail, Evri and DPD Price Changes for 2026–27

For most online retailers, delivery is the biggest single cost on every order after the product itself. It is also the cost that changes most often. Courier prices rise each year, surcharges come and go, and the rules about what counts as a small or large parcel decide which price band you pay.

2026 has been a busy year for delivery costs. Royal Mail changed its prices several times, raised its fuel surcharge twice and is applying a peak surcharge to business parcels over Christmas. Other carriers have their own peak charges and surcharges. Meanwhile, customers expect fast, tracked delivery at little or no cost to them.

This guide explains what has changed, what drives the delivery price you pay, how the main UK carriers compare for online sellers, and practical ways to bring your delivery cost per order down. It is written by Ogden Fulfilment, a family-run fulfilment company in West Yorkshire that ships around 850,000 orders a year for more than 140 brands.

What changed in 2026: Royal Mail

Royal Mail publishes its price changes in advance. For business account customers, the main changes in 2026 were:

  • 5 January: the Fuel Surcharge was renamed the Fuel and Energy Surcharge and rose from 8% to 11%.
  • 7 April: the main annual price change for online, Post Office, franking and business account customers, covering parcels, Tracked services, Signed For and Special Delivery.
  • 3 May: the Fuel and Energy Surcharge rose again, from 11% to 16%. Royal Mail also cut the notice period for fuel surcharge changes from 30 days to 14 days.
  • 5 October: further changes, including business Royal Mail 24 and 48 prices.
  • 2 November 2026 to 10 January 2027: a Peak Surcharge applies to business account domestic parcel and international products.

Two points stand out. First, a fuel and energy surcharge of 16% means the headline rate on your contract is no longer the price you pay. Second, the shorter notice period for fuel surcharge changes leaves less time to plan for future increases.

If you have not checked recently, compare your current Royal Mail invoices with what you were paying at the start of the year. Many sellers find their real cost per parcel has risen by more than the headline price changes suggest.

What drives the delivery price you pay

Whichever carrier you use, the price of each parcel depends on a few factors.

Weight and size bands

Carriers price in bands by weight and size. A parcel that is a few grams over a weight limit, or a few millimetres over a size limit, jumps into the next band. For a brand sending thousands of parcels, the difference between one band and the next can be the largest saving available.

Dimensional weight

Many carriers now charge on volumetric (dimensional) weight as well as actual weight, taking whichever is higher. A light product in a large box can be charged as if it were much heavier. Oversized packaging is one of the most common, and most avoidable, causes of high delivery costs. Our guide to sustainable packaging fulfilment explains how packaging choice affects dimensional weight and courier costs.

Service level

Next-day, tracked delivery costs more than a two to three day service, and timed or weekend delivery costs more again. The service you offer at checkout should match what your customers actually value, not what you assume they want.

Surcharges

Fuel surcharges, peak surcharges, remote-area surcharges for places such as the Scottish Highlands, Northern Ireland and the islands, and charges for oversized or incorrectly declared parcels can all add to the base price. Evri, for example, lists peak-season charges for oversized parcels as well as year-round charges for remote areas, relabelling and parcels heavier than declared.

Volume

Carriers offer better rates to senders with higher, steadier volumes. This is where small and growing brands are at a disadvantage when buying delivery on their own.

How the main UK carriers compare for online sellers

Each carrier suits different products and customer promises. The right answer is often a mix rather than a single carrier.

Royal Mail is the default for many small and medium online sellers. Its Tracked 24 and Tracked 48 services suit small, light parcels that fit through a letterbox or can be left safely, and its network reaches every UK address. Its price changes and surcharges in 2026 make it worth reviewing what you pay.

Evri is often chosen as an economy option for lower-value parcels where price matters more than speed. Check its service levels, tracking and surcharges against your customers’ expectations before relying on it for everything.

DPD is widely used for next-day delivery of larger or higher-value parcels, with tracking and delivery time windows that customers value. It usually costs more per parcel than economy services.

DHL, UPS, Parcelforce and others fill specific needs, such as heavier items, international delivery or premium services.

Many brands get the best balance by using an economy service for low-value standard orders, a tracked next-day service for orders where speed matters, and a premium carrier for heavy, bulky or high-value items. A fulfilment provider with several carriers connected can apply these rules automatically, order by order.

Ten ways to reduce your delivery cost per order

1. Right-size your packaging

Use the smallest box or mailer that protects the product. Letterbox-sized packaging can move a parcel into a cheaper band and reduce failed deliveries at the same time. Review your packaging range against your best-selling SKUs at least once a year.

2. Check the bands your parcels fall into

Weigh and measure your most common orders, packed, and compare them with your carriers’ bands. Small changes to packaging or to the products you bundle can move thousands of parcels into a lower band.

3. Match the service to the order

Not every order needs next-day delivery. Offer standard delivery as the default and next-day as a paid or threshold-based upgrade, and make sure the service you book matches the one the customer chose.

4. Use more than one carrier

Using a mix of carriers lets you choose the right price and service for each parcel, and gives you a fallback if one network has problems during peak.

5. Watch the surcharges

Fuel, peak and remote-area surcharges add up. Build them into your delivery pricing at checkout, and review your invoices for surcharges you did not expect, such as charges for incorrect weights or dimensions.

6. Get declared weights right

Under-declaring weights or dimensions can lead to correction charges. Accurate product data, and a warehouse system that calculates parcel weights automatically, prevents this.

7. Set a sensible free delivery threshold

Free delivery above a basket value encourages larger orders, which spreads the delivery cost across more items. Set the threshold based on your average order value and margin, not on what competitors do.

8. Plan for peak

Peak surcharges, earlier courier cut-offs and higher volumes all arrive at once in November and December. Our peak season fulfilment guide covers how to plan stock, cut-offs and delivery promises for the busiest weeks.

9. Reduce failed deliveries

Every failed delivery or return to sender costs money. Clear tracking updates, accurate addresses and safe-place options all help. Our automatic shipping tracking pushes tracking numbers back to your store so customers know where their parcel is.

10. Pool your volume

The quickest way for a growing brand to access better carrier rates is to share a fulfilment provider’s volume. A 3PL negotiates rates on the combined volume of all its clients, which is usually far higher than any one brand could achieve alone.

Delivery costs and your total cost per order

Delivery is one part of your fulfilment cost, alongside storage, pick and pack labour and packaging. Look at all four together. A cheaper courier that leads to more lost parcels and complaints can cost more overall, and a slightly higher pick fee can be outweighed by better courier rates. Our fulfilment pricing guide explains how to calculate your all-in cost per order and compare providers fairly.

How Ogden Fulfilment handles delivery

At Ogden Fulfilment, delivery is built into the fulfilment service:

  • We work with Royal Mail, DPD, DHL, Evri and other carriers, so each order can go by the service that suits it.
  • We manage courier relationships on our clients’ behalf and pass on preferential rates, or we can integrate with your existing courier contracts.
  • Labels are generated automatically and tracking numbers are pushed back to your store as soon as an order is dispatched.
  • Orders received before 1pm on weekdays and 11:30am at weekends are dispatched the same day, seven days a week. See our next-day and 7-day fulfilment service for details.

Frequently asked questions

When does Royal Mail’s peak surcharge apply?

For the 2026 peak season, Royal Mail’s Peak Surcharge applies to business account domestic parcel and international products from 2 November 2026 to 10 January 2027 inclusive.

What is Royal Mail’s fuel and energy surcharge?

It is a percentage added to the price of business account services. Royal Mail raised it from 8% to 11% on 5 January 2026 and to 16% on 3 May 2026. Check Royal Mail’s current price guide for the rate that applies today.

Is Evri cheaper than Royal Mail?

It depends on the parcel, the service and the surcharges that apply. Evri is often used as an economy option, while Royal Mail’s Tracked services suit small parcels that need wide coverage and tracking. Compare both on your real parcel sizes and service needs.

How can a small business get cheaper courier rates?

The most effective way is to combine volume with other senders, usually by using a fulfilment provider that negotiates rates across all its clients. Right-sizing packaging and choosing the right service for each order also reduce costs.

Does packaging size affect delivery costs?

Yes. Many carriers charge on dimensional weight when it is higher than actual weight, and parcel size also decides the price band. Smaller, well-fitted packaging can lower costs significantly.
