How Sustainable Is Your Fulfilment Process?

02/02/2026 | Share:

Sustainability isn’t just a buzzword — it’s a growing expectation from customers, investors, and regulators. For e‑commerce brands, fulfilment is one of the most visible (and impactful) parts of the supply chain. From packaging waste to energy use, your fulfilment process can either support or undermine your brand’s environmental commitments. So how sustainable is it really?

Recycling Isn’t Enough — Reuse Matters

Many businesses assume their sustainability efforts begin and end with recyclable packaging. But fulfilment goes much deeper. At Ogden Fulfilment, we work with brands that care about reducing their impact — and we’ve built our operations to help them do just that. We’ve held ISO 14001 environmental accreditation since 2020, and we apply that framework across everything we do.

The first major area to consider is packaging. Recyclable materials are a good start, but reuse is even better. At Ogden, we shred waste cardboard onsite and use it as protective filler in outgoing parcels — reducing both waste and the need for additional materials. We also recycle soft plastics, reuse suitable incoming packaging, and compact waste to reduce landfill.

Transport Impact: Think Beyond the Warehouse

Next is transport. While we don’t control the final mile delivery, we work closely with carriers like Royal Mail, DPD, and DHL to use consolidated pickups and tracked services that avoid failed delivery attempts. Fewer failed deliveries means fewer unnecessary miles and less CO₂.

Efficiency in Warehouse Operations

Inside the warehouse, sustainability shows up in the details. We use energy-efficient LED lighting throughout our sites, along with modern equipment that’s maintained to minimise waste and power draw. We also provide regular training to all staff on environmental practices and safe handling of hazardous goods, including inks, batteries, and electronic items.

Why Outsourcing Can Be the Greener Option

Another key benefit of outsourcing your fulfilment to an accredited provider is scale. In-house operations often rely on ad hoc processes — excessive packaging, unnecessary printouts, and frequent waste. A dedicated 3PL like Ogden offers centralised systems that reduce duplication, standardise processes, and make sustainability measurable.

Sustainability Drives Loyalty

E‑commerce brands that want to grow long term need to align fulfilment with customer values. Many consumers now actively seek out businesses that minimise environmental impact, and poor fulfilment can undermine even the strongest sustainability messaging. If your packaging is wasteful, if your orders arrive damaged or late, or if your processes generate unnecessary emissions — your customers will notice.

Partner With a Fulfilment Provider That Shares Your Values

Ogden Fulfilment helps brands get this right. From ISO-accredited processes to everyday operational changes, we support sustainability without compromising performance. Whether you’re shipping 100 orders a week or 10,000, we make it easier to deliver responsibly.
