How to increase your average order value over the Festive Period

04/11/2018 | Share:

With the busy festive period just around the corner, you want to be making the most of all those Christmas shoppers and gift buyers this year. We take a look at how you can encourage online customers to buy more and increase the average order value for your ecommerce store.

Cross-Selling

Cross-selling is when you promote a product that will work well and compliment a product a customer is either looking at or has placed in their basket. No matter what you are selling, this type of promoting works great at Christmas because people want to give great gifts. For example, if a customer is looking at a pair of slippers on your website, suggest to them the matching dressing gown.

Not only are you inspiring better gift giving, but you are also increasing the order value with one simple, slightly persuaded click!

Minimum Order Discounts

Everyone loves to feel like they are getting a bargain. Especially during what can be an expensive season. By offering a minimum order value to qualify for free shipping or 15% off, your customers will be more likely to add more things into their basket and will appreciate your business more which could lead to higher rates of customer loyalty in the future.

Product Bundles

One step further than cross-selling is creating product bundles that cost slightly less than it would to buy all the items individually. This is a tried and tested way of increasing your average order value. Someone who came to your website looking for a new laptop for Christmas will be more than likely to buy a laptop that comes with a laptop case and headphones if they are saving money.

Customisable product bundles are also a great way of increasing your order value. For example, if you sell women’s clothing, you could offer a “build a Christmas outfit for £xx” and include a range of dresses, shoes and accessories and allow your customers to choose one from each category to qualify for the deal. A customer that came to your website looking for a dress for a Christmas party will now leave with a pair of shoes and a necklace too.

Product bundles make it easier for your customer to get what they want. They will come to your website for one thing and leave with three.

Gift Wrapping

Offering a gift wrapping service is a great way of increasing the order value just before the checkout. Although it may seem a simple technique, it can be very effective during the Christmas season. Offering to throw in a greetings card or a gift box with the purchase will not only save your customer time and effort when the product arrives, but it will also allow you to make little more money on each purchase.
